Congressman Cohen Announces Grant to University of Memphis for Studying Microplastics in Agricultural Soils

June 3, 2020

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the University of Memphis will receive a grant of $482,080 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture to study microplastics and their degradation and transport in agricultural soil and the interaction of hydrodynamics, chemistry and material sciences.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"This basic research in agriculture soils will help us understand how microplastics used in agriculture break down over time and should help in improving the environmental quality, sustainability and resilience of agricultural land and increase crop yields. I'm pleased that this work will keep U of M researchers exploring this important field."
