Congressman Cohen Announces $6.3 Million in Community Development Housing Grants

September 8, 2020

Continues to work on improving CDBG funding for Memphis

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, today announced that Memphis will receive a grant of $5,275,501 and Shelby County will receive $1,107,065 in Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding.

Congressman Cohen last month wrote to Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland about the outdated funding formula that shortchanges Memphis in the award of CDBG funding and vowed to correct it. Congressman Cohen told Strickland that he plans to introduce legislation to both remedy the formula and increase overall funding for the program after seeking the mayor's input. See that letter here.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"The CDBG program is a critical tool for our city. The funding helps to strengthen families and communities through homeownership, creates jobs through the expansion and retention of businesses, creates safer communities, invests in our next generation and helps seniors live independently. While these grants announced today will go a long way in advancing those goals, I look forward to helping Memphis get a fairer share of this funding in the future."
