Cohen Announces $2 Million in New Federal Funds for Renovation of National Civil Rights Museum

April 24, 2013

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) has awarded the National Civil Rights Museum $2 Million for renovation.

“The National Civil Rights Museum is a national gem, immersing visitors in the history of the Civil Rights Movement in America,” said Congressman Cohen. “The Museum is currently undergoing necessary renovations and these new federal funds will be used to continue the Museum’s important work well into the future.”

The National Civil Rights Museum is an economic anchor in Memphis, Tennessee. A national marketing campaign will spearhead the reopening of the newly renovated museum and draw attention to Memphis’ many tourism attractions. Memphis suffered several natural disasters in 2011 that resulted in flooding and business disruptions. This renovation project will encourage the return of visitors to the area and help Memphis recover from the 2011 disasters.

This project is funded through the FY 2012 Disaster Relief Opportunity – which Congressman Cohen voted to support on the House floor – and will be administered by the EDA. Each disaster recovery investment is intended to support a community’s long-term recovery, spur job creation, leverage private investment, and promote disaster resiliency.
