Congressman Cohen Questions Former Trump Campaign Manager Corey Lewandowski

September 17, 2019

Says “loyal soldier” offers testimony following a pattern of obstructing Congress

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, today questioned former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski about Trump's request that Lewandowski instruct then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions to make a public statement that Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation was unfair to Trump and that its focus should be on future elections. Lewandowski ultimately declined to deliver the message. See the entire exchange here.

Congressman Cohen quoted from a variety of press accounts regarding Lewandowski's unquestioning loyalty to Trump, and asked:

"Let me ask you this: Did the president pick you as an enforcer because he thought you'd play whatever role he wanted…? Is that possibly why he chose you to take this message to Sessions?"

Lewandowski answered that that question would be better put to the President.

Congressman Cohen noted that Trump talked to Lewandowski outside normal channels so there'd be no record of anything. Congressman Cohen said, "But at the last minute, you got cold feet. You chickened out. The President's trust was misplaced."

Congressman Cohen concluded his questioning by saying Lewandowski's testimony was just "more obstruction of Congress by this Administration" with Lewandowski following instructions not to provide useful testimony.

"You're a loyal soldier," Congressman Cohen said.
