Congressman Cohen Introduces Share America’s Diverse History in the Capitol Act
Would allow states to provide three statues and encourage honoring women and people of color
MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today introduced the Share America's Diverse History in the Capitol Act, which would allow states to send three statues to be displayed in the National Statuary Collection. The bill also encourages them to honor women and members of ethnic and racial minority groups, now underrepresented in memorials inside the U.S. Capitol, to celebrate their contributions to our shared heritage.
States currently send two statues for placement in Statuary Hall, Emancipation Hall and elsewhere in the U.S. Capitol complex.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:
"These days, it is particularly evident how important statues are in symbolizing important aspects of our shared American history. The ‘Share America's Diverse History Act' will allow a thoughtful physical memorial of the legacy of sometimes-overlooked heroines and people of color whose contributions deserve the national attention that display in the U.S. Capitol provides. I urge my Congressional colleagues to join me in this effort and to encourage their state lawmakers to dig into their own rich histories and provide lasting memorials for all Americans to celebrate."
