Congressman Cohen Attends Detroit Funeral for former Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers

November 4, 2019

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), the Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, attended the Greater Grace Temple funeral for former Judiciary Committee Chairman and friend John Conyers, who passed away October 28. The service was attended by former President Bill Clinton, who delivered a stirring eulogy, and by Representatives Sheila Jackson Lee, Hank Johnson, John Lewis, Karen Bass, Gwen Moore, Bobby Scott, Gregory Meeks, Barbara Lee, Rashida Tlaib, Debbie Dingell, Maxine Waters and Joyce Beatty and former Members Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, Bob Goodlatte and Sandy Levin.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"John Conyers led an extraordinary life and will be remembered as a champion of civil rights and civil liberties. As his colleague during his chairmanship of the Judiciary Committee, I learned a lot from him. Bill Clinton was right when he said Mr. Conyers ‘did some simple things that showed his brain was connected to his heart' -- like hiring Rosa Parks when he learned she couldn't make a living in Alabama. I will miss a treasured friend. His was a life well-lived."

Last week, I went to the well of the House to speak about my friend. See those remarks here.
