Congressman Cohen Announces Adult Literacy Research Grant to University of Memphis

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the University of Memphis will receive a grant of $337,088 from the U.S. Department of Education to work on a technology-based reading comprehension system for adult literacy students.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"With one in six adults reading at a low proficiency level, this grant will address a critical national need. I'm pleased this funding will put the U of M in the vanguard of adult education programs addressing this problem."

The research is aimed at adult students reading at the 3^rd grade through 8^th grade levels and is being undertaken in collaboration with Georgia State University and the Educational Testing Service.
