June 11, 2020

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the University of Memphis will receive a grant of $337,088 from the U.S. Department of Education to work on a technology-based reading comprehension system for adult literacy students.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"With one in six adults reading at a low proficiency level, this grant will address a critical national need. I'm pleased this funding will put the U of M in the vanguard of adult education programs addressing this problem."

The research is aimed at adult students reading at the 3rd grade through 8th grade levels and is being undertaken in collaboration with Georgia State University and the Educational Testing Service.
