Two more prisoners who were released from the Guantanamo Bay detention center in the first six months of the year have returned to the battlefield, the White House said Wednesday.
A report from the Office of Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) revealed that nine people who have been released from Guantanamo have rejoined militant groups since President Barack Obama took office in 2009, according to Reuters.
The number of militants freed by the Obama administration that the U.S. “suspected” of rejoining fighting in the Middle East has dropped from 11 to 12, the report said.
Obama’s hope since his first year in office was to close Guantanamo. A fast track plan he rolled out in February drew scrutiny from Republican and some Democrat lawmakers. The detention facility was opened in 2002 to hold foreign terrorism suspects.
