January 29, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. —U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker (R-Pa.) will serve as Republican Leader of the House Education and Labor Committee's Higher Education and Workforce Investment Subcommittee for the 116th Congress, the Education and Labor Committee announced Tuesday.

"Improving college affordability, expanding apprenticeships and strengthening career and technical education are all ways we can help people achieve the American dream," Smucker said. "This committee's work has a huge impact on so many people in our country – and I'm eager to get to work and help Americans learn the skills needed to succeed in life."

The subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Investment focuses on education and labor development beyond the high school level. This includes postsecondary education as well as technical education and apprenticeship programs. The subcommittee also focuses on campus safety issues. Rep. Susan Davis (D-Calif.) serves as Democratic subcommittee chair.

Since 1867, the House Committee on Education and Labor has focused on growing and strengthening the American workforce to compete in a global economy.

Committee Republican Leader Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) congratulated Smucker on Tuesday.

"Rep. Smucker is a dedicated public servant and a valued and respected member of the committee," Foxx said. "I am delighted that he will lead Republican members of the Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Investment in the 116th Congress, and know that he will do an excellent job as Republicans continue our efforts to align postsecondary and skills-based education with in-demand jobs."

Smucker pledged to continue fighting for the rights of Pennsylvanians and all Americans through his position on the committee.

"I'm going to draw from my own experience as a small business owner and chair of the Pennsylvania Senate Education Committee to best help my constituents, who are at the heart of everything I do," Smucker said. "I'm proud to continue serving them, the people of Pennsylvania and our country on this committee."
