Internships

Internships

A qualified intern candidate will possess familiarity with the American political system and Congress, have an interest in current events and news, as well as demonstrate strong communication skills and work ethic. Must have an enthusiastic “can do” attitude as customer service is a very important cornerstone to this role. Pennsylvania ties are preferred but not required. Depending on the number of hours worked and eligibility for academic credit, an intern may be eligible to receive a stipend.

Internships in the congressional district and Washington, D.C. offices may be available for the spring (Jan-May), summer (Jun-Aug), and fall (Sept-Dec) terms. Applicants must select their one preferred location. Application due dates for each term are as follows:

  • Spring: (rolling)
  • Summer: March 1
  • Fall: (rolling)

Our office is currently accepting applications for the spring, summer, and fall term. Applications submitted for other terms will not be considered.

Due to the large numbers of applications received, you may hear from our office only if an interview is requested.

Washington, DC

In Washington, D.C., intern responsibilities will vary. An intern may be asked to answer phones, run office errands in the Capitol Complex, conduct research for the Member and staff, attend hearings and briefings, and draft constituent letters on various issues. As a result, an intern should learn about the legislative process and the many other functions of a congressional office.

Internship hours are flexible to accommodate a student’s course schedules, but generally run 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. when the House is in session, and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. when not in session.

District

In the district office, interns are expected to manage administrative and district-based assignments including but not limited to answering phone and mail correspondence, providing various constituent services, and executing front office responsibilities.
