Smucker-Supported Legislation Meets the Needs of a Modern Workforce

April 26, 2017

Washington, D.C. – The House Committee on Education and the Workforce today passed legislation cosponsored by U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker (PA-16) to better meet the needs of a modern workforce.

The Working Families Flexibility Act would amend the Fair Labor Standards Act to allow private sector employees to choose what works better for themselves and their family – paid time off or cash wages for any overtime hours worked.

"Our workforce is constantly transforming to meet the needs of a 21st century economy, and we need to work to ensure we are providing employees the opportunity to better balance their professional and personal obligations," said Rep. Smucker. "Whether it's caring for an aging family member, or a single parent working to meet the needs of their children, employees should have the flexibility they need. I am glad this bill was passed out of committee, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to pass this bill on the House floor."

Currently, public sector employees are given the flexibility to receive compensated time off for working more than 40 hours per week. This allows them to spend more time with their family, take time off to attend a parent-teacher conference, stay home with a newborn, or any other personal needs that arise. However, due to outdated regulations, private sector employees are not given this option for working overtime. The Working Families Flexibility Act levels the playing field.
