White City, Ore. - On Saturday, Representative Greg Walden (R-Ore.) and Rep. Phil Roe (R-Ten.) - also the House Committee on Veterans Affairs Chairman - visited the White City VA to address the issues of homeless veterans.
Throughout the tour, both Walden and Roe were shown the new in-patient facility as well as the out-patient facility on the campus, including the rooms of the in-patient facility and hearing about the programs at the White City VA for homeless veterans.
"It's that recruitment-retention piece that we know we have to focus on," Walden said. "The Chairman is very progressive in terms of what we need to do to take care of patients going forward. He is a veteran. He is a doctor. I think really brings some smart ideas to the process."
Roe noted substance abuse has been an on-going problem that keeps homeless veterans from "picking themselves up and dusting off their pants" to move forward in their lives.
