Bonamici Presides Over Passage of Climate Action Now Act
WASHINGTON, DC [05/2/19] – Today Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), a member of the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, presided over the House of Representatives during final passage of the Climate Action Now Act.
The bill demonstrates the resolve of the House of Representatives to honor the Paris Agreement as a first step to address the climate crisis. The legislation prohibits the use of any federal funds to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Agreement and directs the Trump administration to develop a plan for how to meet the Paris Agreement targets and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2025.
Prior to the vote, Bonamici spoke in support of H.R. 9 on the House floor, noting that climate change is one of the greatest existential threats of our time. Video of her remarks can be found here.
"My home state of Oregon is one of the many states committed to meeting the Paris Climate Agreement targets, but climate change is a global crisis," Bonamici said. "The Climate Action Now Act is a clear signal to our international allies and to the world that the United States – at least the United States House of Representatives – is supporting the upholding of our nation's commitments to the Paris Agreement."
"The cost of climate change is too high to wait any longer," she continued. "We can protect the planet, unleash innovation, and create good jobs. This bill is an important first step."
Bonamici is one of nine Democrats to serve on the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, which is charged with developing recommendations for Congress to take meaningful, bold action to address climate change. She has repeatedly criticized the Trump Administration's decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement.
As a member of the Science, Space, and Technology Committee and Co-Chair of the House Oceans Caucus and Congressional Estuary Caucus, throughout her time in Congress Bonamici has focused on defending science and addressing the causes and consequences of climate change.
