Bonamici Celebrates Passage of Government Reform Bill H.R. 1

March 8, 2019

The For the People Act includes voting provisions championed by Oregon

WASHINGTON, DC [03/08/19] – Today Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) praised the passage of H.R. 1, the For the People Act, which would provide long-overdue government reforms and address the dominance of big money in American politics.

H.R. 1 is the signature legislative package of the new House Democratic Majority. It addresses campaign finance reform, voting rights, election security, accountability for government officials, and more.

"It is past time for Congress to strengthen protections for the most fundamental and crucial elements of our democracy: voting rights, elections, and government accountability," said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. "I am proud to support H.R. 1 because it includes many overdue government reforms that will make sure the voices of Oregonians and Americans across the country are heard, keeping power securely in the hands of the people.

"H.R. 1 includes many of the voting provisions that Oregonians have already adopted and appreciate. The For the People Act helps states across the country follow Oregon's lead by expanding automatic voter registration, online registration, and vote-by-mail to make it easier for millions of people to exercise their right to vote. The bill also requires paper ballots, like we have in Oregon.

"To have a government that is truly representative of the people, we must make sure our elections are free and fair, address the dominance of big money in politics, and hold officials accountable.

"Unfortunately, we know that many people in our country, particularly communities of color, have been targeted by voter suppression efforts and faced other challenges that create burdens to voting and stifle their voice. H.R. 1 will directly address many of these disparities. I encourage the Senate to take up the For the People Act so we can strengthen our democracy and share many of the benefits that voters in Oregon already enjoy."
