Bonamici Appointed to House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis
WASHINGTON, DC [02/07/19] –Today Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) announced that she has been appointed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi to serve on the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis.
"I am honored that Speaker Pelosi has selected me to serve on the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis," said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. "The science is clear; the consequences of inaction on climate change will be serious and swift. My constituents and people across the country are already facing the challenges of ocean acidification, rising sea levels, raging wildfires, changing agricultural conditions, and extreme weather events. We have the opportunity and the imperative to reverse and mitigate the worst effects of climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to clean energy sources while creating new, good-paying jobs.
"For the last several years, political realities have prevented bold climate policies from coming to the House floor despite repeated calls for action from scientists and members of our communities. Before House Democrats took back the Majority, it had been nearly a decade since the House held productive hearings on climate change. I look forward to working with Select Committee Chair Castor and my colleagues to fight for comprehensive policies that will strengthen the economy and protect our planet for future generations."
Bonamici has focused on defending science and addressing the causes and consequences of climate change throughout her time in Congress. She has served as a member of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee since 2012. During the 114th and 115th Congress, she served as the top Democrat on the Subcommittee on the Environment.
As Co-Chair of both the House Oceans Caucus and Congressional Estuary Caucus, Bonamici has also worked tirelessly to protect the health of our oceans and estuaries, which face immediate threats from our failure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Bonamici has repeatedly led efforts to hold members of the Trump Administration accountable for their attacks on science and the environment. After the Trump Administration tried to bury the Fourth National Climate Assessment by releasing it on a holiday weekend, she shared climate findings from the assessment every day on Twitter for six weeks and led 96 members in calling on President Trump to act on climate change and take heed of the findings of the Assessment.
She has also been a vocal opponent of Andrew Wheeler's nomination to lead the Environmental Protection Agency. Last year, she led 97 of her colleagues in opposing Acting Administrator Wheeler's plans to eliminate the EPA's Office of the Science Advisor.
