BEAVERTON, Ore. — U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici toured Beaverton on Tuesday with Meals on Wheels, visiting seniors at their homes.
She says the service is crucial for older Americans, and she'll fight to keep it around despite threats of budget cuts from the White House.
She says it's not just about the meals and nutrition, but for many of the seniors it's a chance for social contact and to engage with someone for a little while.
"When we can keep seniors healthy in their homes, it is better for the senior, and it's better for the family, and it's better for the communities," she said.
Bonamici says she's confident there's bipartisan support for programs like Meals on Wheels and that the budget would still have to get through Congress.
She also says once she returns to Washington, D.C., she'll be focused on providing aid after Harvey.
