Controversial Bill 1574-A, introduced by Council Member, Anthony Reynoso, has been approved by City Council. The bill mandates the establishment of commercial waste zones, and repeals sections 16-523 and 16-524 of such code, relating to a pilot of special trade waste removal districts. The Department of Sanitation would designate commercial waste zones and enter into agreements with private carters to operate in the zones.

Bill Intro. 1082, introduced by Rafael Salamanca, Jr., requiring global positioning systems in trucks that are used to collect waste in commercial waste zones was also passed as well as Bill Intro. 1573, introduced by Reynoso, regulating trade waste industry, adding enforcement of environmental, safety and health standards to the powers and duties of the business integrity commission. Additionally, it would add violation of law relating to the safety of the general public to the reasons a trade waste license could be suspended.

All three bills now go to the Mayor’s desk for signature.
