Congresswoman Elise Stefanik says Republican leaders in Congress are warming to the idea of giving direct relief to local and state governments hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

Her comments in a conference call with North Country officials come after Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell was sharply criticized for calling such aid “a blue state bailout” and suggesting states should file for bankruptcy.

"Senator McConnell is walking back his initially very concerning statement, which I disagreed with," Stefanik said, "and he’s open to including that direct funds."

Stefanik says a new federal aid package could come together in the next few weeks. Congress has already spent $3 trillion in economic aid on the pandemic.
