Western Carolina University Chancellor David Belcher passed away Sunday, university officials said.

Belchor, 60, who has been battling brain cancer since 2016, was on medical leave.

He became chancellor in 2011, and, under his leadership, WCU's enrollment jumped 18 percent.

In 2016, Belcher was diagnosed a glioblastoma brain tumor and went on medical leave last year.

In April, Gov. Roy Cooper awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine to Belcher, calling him "a hero in higher education."

Arrangements have not been announced. Click here for more information.
