A graduation to remember for West Brunswick High School seniors

SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY)–Graduating is a milestone in life that deserves recognition and West Brunswick High School wasn’t going to let the coronavirus get in the way of that.

The Class of 2020 at West Brunswick High School has had to miss out on a lot of things in their final semester, but the Trojan staff wasn’t about to let them miss out on the joy of graduating high school.

West Brunswick setup tables all throughout the high school, allowing the graduates to reminisce on the past four years. The fun didn’t stop there, with photo opportunities around every corner. It left the seniors at a loss for words.

“I didn’t expect all of this, but it was really nice,”says West Brunswick High School graduate Reid Miller. “They walked us throughout the whole school and all the pictures of all of us everywhere. Just all the memories, it was really good.”

The effort and hard work from the school to honor the graduating seniors didn’t go unnoticed. The students and their parents applauded the district for taking the time to still make this a special day even with everything going on.

“It was a neat experience and very heartwarming,”says West Brunswick graduate Nathan Osbahr. “Just being able to see all the teachers care as much as they did to be able to come together and put on an event like this for us.”

Due to the covid-19 restrictions each graduate was only allowed two guests for the ceremony. The parents that did attend thanked the school for giving them the opportunity to watch their children walk across the stage.

“It was amazing, you were able to feel the feelings walking through with the music playing and the lights,”says West Brunswick High School parent Tina Osbahr. “As a parent I appreciate so much what they did for us today.

Just a few weeks ago these seniors thought March 13th would end up being the final time they would walk the halls at West Brunswick High School. On Wednesday, that changed as the fear of moving on set in as soon as they walked in the door, but that feeling quickly changed.

“I was scared at my house, nervous like I was going to throw up,”says West Brunswick 2020 graduate Katarina O’Brien-Brown. “The second I walked in the door seeing all my teachers again with their love and support, I was like you know what. I got this, this is my time.”

The more than 300 seniors at West Brunswick High School will receive a copy of all the diploma ceremonies put together in a graduation video for them to enjoy.
