WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Betty McCollum has won this year’s Minnesota congressional “Hotdish Off.”

McCollum won the fifth annual hotdish competition among Minnesota’s congressional delegation. Her “Turkey, Sweet Potato and Wild Rice Hotdish” took first place Wednesday.

Fellow Democrat Tim Walz fell short in his bid for a third straight hotdish win. Walz says like the 1998 Minnesota Vikings, “we came up just short of glory.”

Freshman Republican Tom Emmer took part in his first competition. Emmer says his entry — “Fresh Meat Hotdish” — was a fresh take on his mom’s recipe.

Sen. Al Franken started the hotdish contest as a way to blend bipartisanship and Minnesota traditions.

This year’s contest was judged by University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler, Star Tribune editorial writer Jill Barcum and former MinnPost reporter Devin Henry.
