The average number of new coronavirus cases reported daily in Michigan has been rising slightly.

Michigan’s seven-day average of new daily cases as of Saturday reached 206 cases, the highest total since the seven-day average hit 210 on June 5. There were 221 new cases reported by Michigan health officials Tuesday, June 23, which will push the seven-day average even higher and brings the state case total to 61,630.

There were also 11 new deaths reported Tuesday, raising the number of fatal COVID-19 cases to 5,864.

While new cases have declined since the state’s peak, Michigan has seen a recent uptick in cases.

Fifty-four of Michigan 83 counties, 65%, reported no new cases on Tuesday.

Individuals 60 years old and older have had the most severe cases of COVID-19, with those age groups accounting for 88 percent of the state’s deaths.

Black residents have also been hit harder than other demographics. Their deaths account for 1,553 per million residents, which far exceeds white Michiganders, who account for 377 deaths per million residents.

Southeast Michigan has been hit the hardest throughout the pandemic. Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties make up 60 percent of the known cases and 76 percent of the reported deaths, despite making up 38 percent of the population, according to 2019 U.S. Census estimates.

COVID-19 Prevention tips:

In addition to washing hands regularly and not touching your face, officials recommend practicing social distancing, assuming anyone may be carrying the virus.

Health officials say you should be staying at least 6 feet away from others and working from home, if possible.

Use disinfecting wipes or disinfecting spray cleaners on frequently-touched surfaces in your home (door handles, faucets, countertops) and carry hand sanitizer with you when you go into places like stores.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has also issued an executive order requiring people to wear face coverings over their mouth and nose while inside enclosed, public spaces.
