As the coronavirus continues to spread and in an effort to maintain the State of Florida’s guidelines on slowly reopening the economy, the City of DeLand is canceling all of its Memorial Day weekend events.

The city’s main event, held annually at Bill Dreggors Park, is a part of that cancellation, partly because of the many at-risk veterans and community members who usually attend. However, DeLand’s Hometown Heroes Military Banner Program will run as scheduled in July.

“We look forward to celebrating our veterans later this year on Veterans Day,” said Mayor Bob Apgar in a news release. “In lieu of the annual event on Memorial Day, we ask all of our residents to take a moment to recognize those who lost their lives defending our freedom.”
