Pro-Choice Caucus Leaders Decry Anticipated Trump Administration Rule that Targets Women, Transgender Patients

January 17, 2018

WASHINGTON, DCIn response to reports that the Trump administration will soon allow health workers to refuse to participate in healthcare they object to, including constitutionally-protected abortions, healthcare for transgender patients, and other services, the co-chairs of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus, Representatives Diana DeGette (D-CO) and Louise Slaughter (D-NY), issued the following statement:

"This is a political attempt to put patients' health at risk in clear violation of medical duty. A provider's personal beliefs should never determine the care a patient receives. We know of instances where hospitals have turned away women seeking information about abortion or treatment for miscarriages. Such practices put personal beliefs over patients' needs and could result in infertility, infection and even death.

"We urge the administration not to move forward with this blatant attack on women's right to choose, transgender rights, and on any number of other areas where ill-defined ‘moral objections' can be used to justify harming another individual."
