Congressman Costa Votes to Protect Dreamers

June 4, 2019

(Washington, D.C.) - Congressman Jim Costa (CA-16) released the following statement today after Congress voted to pass H.R. 6, The American Dream and Promise Act:

"Dreamers want what every American wants: A better life for themselves and their families. These individuals came here through no choice of their own at an early age. For them, America is the only home they've ever known," said Costa. "I voted today for the American Dream and Promise Act because it's time we end the uncertainty surrounding their fate. We must uphold our promises and embrace the contributions these young immigrants make to our communities every day."

H.R. 6 offers a pathway to citizenship for these and other similarly situated immigrants who have spent much of their lives in the United States, including more than 14,000 in Rep. Costa's district alone.

"I commend Congressman Jim Costa and other Congress members for taking action and passing The Dream and Promise Act," said America Hernandez, a DACA recipient and Fresno Resident.

"I hope that the Senate and the President are able to put partisan issues aside and come together to move this bill forward," Hernandez continues. "As a Dreamer and DACA recipient, it is my hope that this could be a first step towards working across party lines to produce comprehensive immigration reform to protect all immigrants that have for decades lived in the shadows and contributed to this great country."

Without the permanent protections in the American Dream and Promise Act, these immigrants' and their families' futures in the United States - as well as the economic contributions they make - are at risk.
