Washington, D.C. - Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement marking the 45th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision today:

"Forty-five years ago, the Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade affirmed a bedrock principle: that reproductive rights must be protected; that the right to privacy must be preserved; and that a woman's health decisions must be her own, in consultation with her family, her physician and her faith.

"Unfortunately, over the last several years, the rights protected by Roe v. Wade have been under assault by Congressional Republicans. Republicans have waged war on a woman's fundamental right to choose and have attempted to insert themselves into the most personal and private health decisions. Last year, and just this weekend, millions of women around the country marched in solidarity to remind Republicans that we will not be silenced and we will not allow our rights or the progress we have made to be ripped away.

"On this anniversary, sustained by the strength and determination of these brave American women, Democrats renew our vow to stand strong to defend reproductive choice and work toward a comprehensive approach to reproductive health care. Together, we can safeguard a woman's right to choose and we can reduce the number of unintended pregnancies at home and around the world with critical and affordable family planning services. Democrats will continue to work to build on the legacy of Roe v. Wade and protect the rights of women across the country."
