Three Democratic House committee chairmen hate President Donald Trump so deeply that they have predetermined that he must have committed a crime – any crime, some crime.

To find evidence of a crime, they have opened extensive investigations that will lay the groundwork for impeachment. They apparently have given up hope that the Mueller investigation, in which they had placed so much faith, will nail the president. After nearly two years of this witch hunt, they must certainly now believe that the investigation is a nothing-burger.

These Democrats hate President Trump so personally, and so viscerally, that they are willing to turn America into a Soviet-style state where the police apparatus is used extensively to go after one’s political enemies.

ANDREW MCCARTHY: COHEN HEARING IS ONE LONG DEMOCRATIC ATTACK ON TRUMP

One of these chairmen, Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., of the House Judiciary Committee, has subpoenaed documents from 81 individuals and entities to fully “investigate” President Trump. He has no evidence of a crime to investigate, so he is going after virtually everyone who has known Donald Trump over his lifetime.

For what purpose? Pure hatred? He has the power that comes with being a committee chairman in Congress, and he hopes to find something, anything, incriminating that might lead to impeachment.

One would think that the other two chairmen – Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif, of the House Intelligence Committee and Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., of the House Oversight Committee – would have learned from the Michael Cohen hearing in the House Oversight Committee last week that airing the testimony of a convicted liar does not solidify their narrative.

According to the Cohen testimony, we learned the following: There is no Trump love child. There was no abortion paid for by Trump. There was no evidence of “collusion” with the Russians by Trump or anyone connected to him. Then-candidate Trump found out about the WikiLeaks document dump at the same time as the rest of the world. Cohen has never been to Prague. And that’s just some of the testimony given by the Democrats’ star witness.

It was fun to watch the Democrats’ case crumble around them while Republicans hammered at Cohen’s credibility. As the Democrats tried to rehabilitate Cohen’s tattered reputation, they must not have noticed that Cohen was contradicting every point upon which the Democrats had hoped to make their impeachment case.

Chairmen Nadler, Schiff and Cummings are going on an old-fashioned fishing expedition to undermine this president for political purposes. They’re not investigating a crime – they are trying to overthrow the will of the American voter.

Apparently, Chairman Nadler didn’t watch the hearing because he included Cohen on his list of witnesses. The list is fun in one sense: it is so bizarre. My personal favorite on the list is Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, who has been hiding abroad for years in order to prevent extradition and prosecution. It is humorous to consider how they hope to gather his testimony.

While the proposals of Chairmen Nadler, Schiff and Cummings seem ridiculous enough to provoke chuckles, it fills one with anxiety that these leaders are behind the wheels of some powerful congressional cars. They are going on an old-fashioned fishing expedition to undermine this president for political purposes.

They’re not investigating a crime – they are trying to overthrow the will of the American voter.

We learned from an inspector general’s report that some of the highest officials in our federal police apparatus – the FBI and Department of Justice – were abusing their powers in order to prevent the election of candidate Trump, and then delegitimize his presidency after the 2016 election. The result was a series of resignations, demotions, early retirements, criminal investigations and prosecutions.

Now we are seeing the abuse of congressional power by these three committees for the purpose, as Chairman Nadler indicated, of laying the foundation for an impeachment proceeding against President Trump.

Make no mistake, these chairmen know they are trying to overturn the 2016 election. Their animus toward this president is leading to an abuse of our political institutions in an effort to take down a political enemy. I wholly condemn this practice, which will ultimately destroy the American political system.
