‘We can save Earth’: Jeff Bezos creates $10B ‘global initiative’ to battle climate change

Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos is pouring $10 billion into his own climate change initiative.

The wealthy businessman announced the “Bezos Earth Fund” in a post on Instagram Monday. Bezos, who is among the richest men in the world with a net worth of approximately $130 billion, also owns the Washington Post.

“Climate change is the biggest threat to our planet,” Bezos wrote. “This global initiative will fund scientists, activists, NGOs — any effort that offers a real possibility to help preserve and protect the natural world.”

He added, “We can save Earth. It’s going to take collective action from big companies, small companies, nation states, global organizations, and individuals.”

The fund will start issuing grants this summer. A source familiar with the fund told the Verge that grants would only be given to charities, not private enterprises.

In September 2018, Bezos announced an initiative to build nonprofit schools in low-income areas that would accept students at no cost. Bezos started the initiative, called the “Bezos Day One Fund,” with a $2 billion investment.
