Requesting a Greeting
Mayoral proclamations are issued at the discretion of the Mayor as a courtesy to proclaim a day, week, or month in honor of a person or cause of significant citywide interest. All proclamations must be presented at an event held in New York City. These public service documents are strictly honorary and are not legally binding.
Proclamations are issued for only one day, week, or month per year. Requests that duplicate the spirit of a proclamation previously issued within the same year will be declined, and a certificate, citation, or congratulatory letter are options that may be provided instead.
For example, if "Safe Cycling Day" is proclaimed on January 1, then "Safe Cycling Week" or "Safe Cycling Month" will not be proclaimed later in the year. Groups are encouraged to coordinate their efforts with parent organizations before contacting the Office of the Mayor with such requests.
Proclamations are generally not issued for anniversaries, birthdays (100th birthday acknowledgements are the exception), graduations, or weddings. These events are typically recognized through certificates, citations, or congratulatory letters, unless deemed otherwise by the Mayor.
Suggested language for proclamation usage is not required of requestors, and if sent, may be edited, rewritten, or rejected.
Requests (except for condolence notes) should be submitted at least 15 business days before you need the document in hand to ensure on-time delivery.
If you have questions or would like to follow up on the status of your request, please contact the
Office of the Mayor
